Our Picks For Mexico City’s Top 5 Burgers (And Hot Dog)

a group of people sitting at a table in a restaurant

Like craft beer, it seems burgers are crazy popular no matter where in the world you travel. We have sampled countless burger joints in Mexico City and these are our top choices.

La Docena

The fun, upbeat atmosphere along with excellent service and marvelous cocktails make La Docena a great choice. It can be busy on weekends so be sure to make a reservation.  While officially a seafood restaurant, they also make terrific burgers. The burgers here are unique, my favorite one has barbecue sauce and onion rings with handmade fries. (Av. Álvaro Obregón 31, Colonia Roma)

La Burguesa

This is a wonderful place to chill out with one of their tasty craft beer selections to enjoy with your burger. It is small inside so try to secure a sidewalk table if possible. Everything here tastes very fresh, which is why they always rank high for best burgers in the city. Try the “Tio Sam” burger with a side of their excellent onion rings or the “La Fuerte” lamb burger topped with camembert. (Calle Cozumel 67B, Colonia Roma)

Soul La Roma

This upscale burger joint has a relaxed atmosphere with a good selection of artisanal beer and one standout burger option to set it apart from all its competitors – the “Sauber” fondue burger! The burger is presented plain before a waiter arrives tableside to top the pattie with gruyere fondue cheese and duck bacon. This is a burger to be savored but if hot dogs are more your thing be sure to try the gourmet offering with mac and cheese topped with bacon bits. Skip the gym and give this place a try – enjoy! (Tabasco 101, Colonia Roma)

Hamburguesas La Parilla

This burger stand offers my favorite burger in Mexico City. I like that it is fast, delicious and inexpensive. With the additional bonus of being located across the street from a playground, making it the perfect place to go for a quick bite with our son before turning him loose. For 40 pesos you get a burger loaded with pineapple and jalapeños (recommended). Lineups move quickly so don’t be scared off. (Corner of Colima & Morelia, Colonia Roma)

Burgers By Buba

If you enjoy a milkshake with your burger, a visit to Burgers By Buba is a must. Their shakes are the best I have had in Mexico and the one I would most strongly recommend is the Nutella with peanut butter. The go to burger here is the cheeseburger with pineapple and bacon, the bacon is chopped and then loaded on. The staff is very friendly but the seating area is small so we usually take our order to go. (Tamaulipas 72, Condesa)

Shake Shack (Chain)

Started as a Central Park hot dog cart, this now famous chain has just arrived in CDMX. There was a lot of hype surrounding the opening of this first Mexico City location so there is often a line but it moves fast. The restaurant itself is fresh, funky and fun and they even sell beer and wine. The burgers here are simple and delicious, with only a few offerings and you must try their crinkle cut fries. Vegetarians will love Shake Shack’s “Shroom Burger”, a portobello mushroom filled with meunster cheese! They have great shakes and custards, including a special “horchata” shake custom made for Mexico City. (Reforma 333)

BurgerFi (Chain)

Similar in theme to Shake Shack, this eco-friendly american fast food chain is focused on all-natural hamburgers, french fries, hot dogs, and custard. Their burgers are a little expensive but you can taste the quality of the meat. There are vegetarian burgers available as well, including the “Beyond Burger.” (Several locations)

If you feel you need a break from the plentiful “T Vitamins” (tacos, tlayudas, tlaycoyos…etc) available around every corner in Mexico City give one of these places a try.
